Winogradsky Column: Microbial Diversity in a Bottle

Last modified: 2017-03-17

Abstract

Domains Eubacteria and Archaebacteria contain diverse species of microorganisms that are normally hard to culture. The use of a Winogradsky column paved the way for the easy isolation, culture and observation of different species of microorganisms with varying metabolic activity. One layer or stratum usually denotes different type of microorganism where the product of one layer supports the growth of the other layer. At the end of this workshop, the participants will be expected to: 1) create their own Winogradsky column, which will later support various species of microorganisms; and 2) explain how the presence or absence of a specific nutrient may affect the population of microorganisms.
