WATER QUALITY ASSESSMENT AND TOTAL COLIFORM ANALYSIS OF MANGROVE WATERS IN “ANG PULO”CALATAGAN, BATANGAS

Abstract


Physicochemical study and total coliform analysis of the mangrove waters of “Ang Pulo” were done in order to assess the water quality of the resource and to provide  baseline information for possible aquaculture production. The people of “Ang Pulo”, Brgy Quilitisan, Calatagan, Batangas is a linkage and adopted community of the Institute of Arts and Sciences of Far Eastern University.  Nine (9) stations were chosen as collection sites and monthly sampling were conducted from October  2016 to February 2017. Physico-chemical  parameters such as Temperature, pH, DO concentration, DO saturation, Transparency,  Water Depth , Salinity and Conductivity  were obtained on-site using GLX explorer and secchi disc. Total coliform, Hardness, Alkalinity, Total Suspended solid (TSS),  Nitrates and Phosphates were analyzed at the FEU  research laboratory. Total coliform MPN values were low  ranging from  < 3  to 4.7 x 104 cells/ml in the sampling sites. Physico-chemical parameter readings showed that the mangrove  waters fall under  Class B water quality criterion indicative of a good water fit for swimming and fishing.
