ASSESSMENT OF PALICO-LIAN RIVER: AS INPUT TO INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIAL DEVELOPMENT IN ZOOLOGY AND SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY

Abstract


 

There is an increasing threat for deterioration and pollution in our rivers and lakes. Efforts should be made to address the needs of our bodies of water because if we will not protect them time will come that they will not fit for human use and consumption and survival of as well as for aquatic organisms.

 

This study assessed  the Palico- Lian River in the province of Batangas. Specifically, the study aimed to evaluate the river’s 1) physical characteristics; 2) water quality parameters- physical, chemical and microbial; 3) developed instructional materials based from the findings of the study; and provide data and information to be integrated in the Bachelor in Secondary Education major in Biological Science curricula.

 

The study made used of descriptive method  to describe, explain and interpret conditions. Water samples were collected and brought to a licensed testing laboratory to determine water quality parameters. A stream walk survey was also conducted to determine the physical condition of the area.

 

The results revealed that Palico- Lian River was used for agricultural, residential and industrial and livelihood purposes. The water quality parameters such as pH, Biological Oxygen Demand, Conductivity, Dissolved Oxygen, Turbidity and Temperature conformed with the standards set by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for Class B Freshwater Type. A diorama and PowerPoint presentation was developed as instructional materials and the collected data and information can be integrated in the Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Biological Science curricula.

 

The level of physical, chemical and microbial parameters of Palico-Lian River are suitable growth for and survival aquatic organisms.The community benefited from the river in terms of its agricultural, industrial, residential and livelihood purposes. The collected data and instructional materials can be utilized to enrich Bachelor of Secondary Education curricula .
