Abstract

The cytotoxic activity of methanolic extract of Muntingia calabura fruit against healthy human blood was determined in this study. Assessed through the 3, (4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) MTT assay, the methanolic extract of Muntingia calabura induced the growth of lymphocyte culture  from healthy blood by up to 5 times the original count. The concentration used (75μg/ml) was found to possess proliferative activity as the rapid growth of healthy blood cells is observed. In conclusion, the methanolic extract of Muntinga calabura fruit possess potential specificity of cytotoxicity to cancer cells as suggested by its proliferative activity to healthy cells. In addition, the fruit possess potential nutrients that contributed to the healthy cell proliferation and survival. Thus, it is highly recommended that the methanolic extract of the fruit may be used for further investigation.
